The Bird Girl statue was created in 1936 by sculptor Sylvia Shaw Judson in Lake Forest, Illinois. It was commissioned as a garden sculpture for a family in Massachusetts. A thin, 8 year old model named Lorraine Greenman posed for the piece.
Only four Bird Girl Statues were made from the original plaster cast. The first went to the Massachusetts garden, the second to Washington, D.C. and the third was purchased by a family in Lake Forest, IL. The fourth and most famous statue was bought by Lucy Boyd Trosdal of Savannah, Georgia, who named it Little Wendy and set it up at her family's plot in Bonaventure Cemetery (the name means "good fortune" in French).
However the Bird Girl statue was made famous by the late Jack Leigh, who photographed it for the cover of John Berendt's bestseller about Savannah, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The Bird Girl was never mentioned in the book, but the director, Clint Eastwood gave her cameo in his movie version starring Kevin Spacey and John Cusack.
The original Savannah Bird Girl, the four foot high bronze statue on the cover of the book, has been moved from Bonaventure Cemetry to Telfair Museum on Barnard Street.
In 1998 Alice Judson Hayes, the artist's daughter authorized a Bird Girl statue replica.
