Savannah's Waving Girl Statue
Florence Margaret Martus was born in 1868 on Cockspur Island and lived her whole life on the Savannah River. Her father was the ordnance sergant for Fort Pulaski. Latter she lived with her brother George Martus, the lighthouse keeper on Elba Island.
She did not miss a single ship between 1887 and 1931, when George retired as lightkeeper. Her "retirement" was noted even in London newspapers. The statue on the River Street commemorates her legacy.
